Rumours: Nerf N-Strike Elite Triad EX-3

Apparently it's called the Triad EX-3 and is that Elite "Jolt" we've been all coo-ing over. Why it's called the Triad is it looks to hold THREE darts(albeit only shoot one) ; and it looks pretty tough too. There's a video from youku after the jump- of course it's in chinese and the fella who owns the gun is obviously pretty young, but it gives you a good idea. Cheers Jason for the lead!

My yearly visit to the US has me planted in California this time- I had plans to do a whole lot more roaming and massive apologies to Bazookafied of Tactical Tag for not being able to make it to Nebraska for some laser tag goodness- logistics just said "No" :(
Instead, tomorrow night (11 September 2012) Australian's all let us rejoice for we are... going head to head with our good friends at Basic Nerf right here in Los Angeles- well apparently in a town called El Monte, and as poetic as this is going to be, we're battling it out in a church. Thank god I have a car and a GPS because I have no idea where that is (still getting used to driving on the other side of the road you crazy Americans!)
I came to the US obviously unarmed, but just picked myself up some brand new gear today that I shall be giving away to someone tomorrow night at the end of the game. Want my new N-Strike Elite Rampage? How about the shirt off my back? (ok I won't be wearing it, it's a new one but it sounds better this way) well come to El Monte tomorrow night and come take it off me!
PS:- I say 'vs' but really I hope not because anyone who knows me knows.. I don't do Nerf wars..ever. I'd get absolutely slaughtered if that was the case..actually I'm going to get slaughtered in ANY case:P Dammit Neil, if only I'd listened to you...:P

9-9-12: My trip to an American Target toy aisle

Traditionally, 9-9-12 is the date Nerf have been publicising for the official launch of their new products/lines; in this year it's the N-Strike Elite gear and namely, the flagship Hailfire. We in Australia tend to get products.. whenever it's convenient for distributors so I was curious to see what it'd be like to be here in the US on the day that's such a big deal for Nerfers everywhere. So on the 9th September, I went and checked out a Target located down in Los Angeles to see what was on offer in the blaster aisle..
I admit I was a tad underwhelmed. Maybe I chose a quiet Target..
The aisle wasn't that big, but it carried an interesting scattering of old and new gear. I noticed some Rayvens, Lumitrons, Vigilons and Praxis's. Then there were classic N-Strike gear like some Mavericks and Nite Finders. And then I got to the Elite stuff.
Interestingly, the most expensive blaster was the Swarmfire- more so that it was the original orange trigger Swarmfire rather than the new and improved one which I thought was weird. There was one lone Hailfire in the whole store- maybe they'd sold out by the time I got there, and it was priced pretty reasonably at 34.99 (plus sales tax- something I always get surprised by in the US). I was disappointed to not find any of the new Lazer Tag gear; hoping I do come across them before I leave.
No vests, but they have the Hailfire upgrade kit ammo packs, and various elite dart packs on offer. Prices were not bad.
Also some scatterings of well respected N-Strike like the Alpha Trooper and Barricade; a lil but not a great deal cheaper than in Australia.
Super Soakers- most of them were here- spotted the Thunder and Lightning Storms, the Electro Storm and the Point Break.
The were really plugging the Nerf Fire vision gear, but I will be interested to see how popular these are. Various attempts in the past to have light up balls have come and gone, and these ones require you to wear headgear- novel concept but I don't see parents thinking running in the dark being a good idea regardless of how well u can see the ball.
So that was it for Nerf. Really? I'm not sure what I was expecting, but probably more stuff than that. Anyway, checking out what else was on offer..
Checking out some of the new Buzzbee line we've heard all about- I admit in person they don't look so exciting and while quite cheap, I couldn't bring myself to buy them.
The Overlord is a motorised belt blaster that I guess is to take on the Vulcan but it's got a really boring form design and.. brown and beige? Ugh.
The Rangemaster is everyone's favourite Buzzbee blaster atm. It's huge, and it shoots quite well apparently, but doesn't fit into my kinda play patterns.
The Jaguar I kinda liked the look of, but again in person they just look a lil rattly.
The Cougar looked cool in the pictures and thought it'd be awesome to repaint, but it's kinda small and less impressive to look at in real life.
Now, Xploderz by the Maya group have been busy- check out these new blasters- still without triggers, but I thought the light up/glow in the dark models were pretty novel. More so that the new 'Tracer' ammo actually glows too, meaning dem squishy ballz now glow when they hit your targets! Wheee!
Ammo also comes in red balls too, adding a more diverse element to game play.
Soo, there you have it folks back home, there's my trip to an LA Target on 9-9-12. I'll keep checking out toystores as I find them:)

I was standing in the toy gun aisle in a Target the other day while I overheard a conversation a man was having with what I think was his gf/wife about Super Soakers. He picked up a Thunderstorm box and showed it to her and said "I got me two of these, Fully automatic madness. I'm gonna totally own Dan's kids next time we have a water fight"
She seemed suitably impressed and said the customary grown up thing to say of "they look so dangerous, so different to when WE were kids" and thought he was an all round wacky kinda guy.
I just looked at them in horror, quietly shook my head and thought to myself "lightweight":P Are you serious? Water guns when you were a kid would totally destroy two Thunderstorms.
How many times has this happened to you when you hear someone talk about toy blasters like they're an expert but really, they have no clue and you can't help but think they're a total noob? Yup, that's how I felt. And then I realised. Dear god, I am a blaster snob..
Ever been to some sort of regular mixer and some guy is trying to go on about how awesome he is because he bought a Nerf gun and boasts about it being a 6 shooter and you feel the massive desire to just jump in and say "that's a Maverick, it's been around for ages, normally the first gun any 8yo gets in the Nerf range, whatever chump"? Then you're a blaster snob.
If you've ever had some friend of yours who's a parent go on about how their kid has "so many Nerf guns" and you look at their collection and say "yawn, yeah I've got them all but that one isn't very good, you obviously don't love your child very much" then... you're a blaster snob.
Ever had someone come to you to tell you about the "latest Nerf gun" and you say "I have it, that's not new".. then you're a blaster snob.
Do you read websites where mainstream journalists write about toy blasters and obviously have no real idea what they're on about, and the photos they show with them holding one like it's from another planet just make you want to cringe and write a comment under their article letting them know the Nitron is NOT the biggest Nerf blaster out there and they're "holding it by the clip, noob"? Then you're a blaster snob.
If you've ever said "it's a blaster, not a gun" then you're a blaster snob.
If you take pleasure in absolutely outclassing some punk who thinks he's the shiz with his stock Recon with your heavily modded to death Longshot and making it rain foam all over him while telling him exactly WHY his blaster is inferior to yours, even if said punk is only 10 years old and you're old enough to be his dad.. then you're a blaster snob.
If you actually read this blog, and blogs like it.. then you're a blaster snob. Especially if you find inaccuracies in my posts and call me on it. Then you're a pedantic douche of a blaster snob:P (hehe)
And, if you've ever cringed at a mother buying a Cosmic Thruster, you know you're probably a blaster snob too. Although if you throw yourself in front of her and stop her and convince her to buy something else, you're just a good Samaritan :D

Nerf N-Strike Elite Stockade: Refined yet angry

With so much buzz for Nerf's new N-Strike Elite line going on, we were all so focused on the Retaliator, Rampage and Hailfire that out of nowhere another blaster in the Elite stable snuck in to the mix (to the point it hasn't even made it to the US yet). In a similar fashion to the Barricade RV-10 (it's original N-Strike counterpart) the new Stockade sort of just..showed up.
Flywheel fans who were a little underwhelmed by the Hailfire have been waiting for this to arrive; good news is it's confirmed the Stockade is going to be an Australian release this year. We're happy to say we got one- our thoughts after the jump.
The Stockade comes in a similar sized box to the Barricade. The first thing we noticed about the packaging (other than the pretty boy band looking fella on the front) is the '15M' sticker. We can't confirm or deny it's been 'detuned' or not because it hasn't been released in the US (where N-Strike Elite blasters boast 75ft ranges) but 15m (which is 50 ft) seems pretty standard for blasters these days so it doesn't sound THAT spesh. We did get the feeling though that for once, the boasted ranges on the box MIGHT be actually be a lil modest.
Inside the box, you get the Stockade, a completely new designed stock, 10 Elite darts and the manual. Batteries not included.
Cutting to the chase, the Stockade is a repainted Barricade RV-10 shell. I mean it's a much better looking paint scheme than the Barricade, so that's an improvement right there but for all intended purposes, it looks and feels like a Barricade. This isn't really a surprise to anyone though- the Retaliator is essentially recycling the shell of an N-Strike Recon CS-6, and the Rampage is an N-Strike Raider CS-35. We've learned that the Elite series is essentially a re-imaging of the N-Strike line rather than an all new one- but what's great is it's more than just a repaint alone. The Stockade might seem like a Barricade... but it's not:)
We can go through all the similarities first- like the Barricade it's a flywheel mechanism semi automatic blaster that has a 10 round capacity.
The Stockade casing is pretty much identical to the Barricade, other than sporting the new blue, orange and white Elite colours. It's solid and sturdy, and its size/form has been likened to both a semi automatic pistol or an SMG. It comes with a tactical rail which will no doubt look great with the rumoured upcoming new Pinpoint Sight repaint:)
As far as the aesthetic 'differences' are concerned other than the paint job, there are a few slight changes to the mould, mainly just the name badges on the side:
And the N-Strike Elite etchings on the rear side of the Stockade.
The Stockade takes three AA batteries like the Barricade; the battery door has been slightly redesigned to feature the "N-Strike Elite" logo rather than the original N-Strike one. There's still the power switch under the battery compartment
Why it's called a Stockade could be a number of reasons, but given it is compatible with all Nerf stocks, it does come standard with an all new designed stock which is actually pretty comfortable to use. It's longer than the Retaliator's and also comes with a useful built in ammo holder that stores 10 extra darts.
Speaking of darts, being an Elite series blaster the Stockade fires the new Elite darts. You can fire whistlers, dart tag and sucker darts too, but for best performances stick with what it comes with.
The thing is, what makes the Stockade great is more than just the aesthetic re-imaging.
The first thing Nerf have done is to somehow make the flywheels quieter- whether it be the motors or by dampening the sound- I'm thinking the former. It's still noisy, but definitely not as much as the original Barricade.
Secondly, it shoots further. Part of this is because of the Elite darts, but I tried them in a stock Barricade and they don't fire nearly as far as when in the Stockade. N-Strike blasters averaged around 12-15 metres- the Stockade quite often fires further than this, hence my belief that 15 metres is at times somewhat modest (which is a good thing). Ranges on the whole were actually not that far off my US purchased Elite Rampage so I was pretty impressed with that. Accuracy is also not bad, though I did find the darts occasionally fish tailed, not unlike in a voltage modded Barricade.
I myself have always been a lil' iffy about flywheel blasters, but even I have been impressed by the Stockade. Sure, the Stockade doesn't have the same performances out of the box as a voltage modded Barricade, but it's definitely superior to a stock Barricade in every way- it performs better, is quieter, looks nicer and is just that much cooler than it's older brother.
While the other blasters in the N-Strike Elite range have been noticeably de-tuned for the Australian market, the Stockade's so far holding its own against the US purchased gear- which is definitely a good thing:D
The official word from Hasbro Australia is the Stockade WILL be available initially from Toys R Us' from November onwards with a RRP of $39.95, with other toy stores officially following suit early 2013. If you did like the Barricade RV-10, you should definitely like the Stockade, while being improved and more refined, the improved performances and new look just make it seem all that bit more.. angry:)

What's on the Docket?

Across the board, things have been kinda quiet. Not just on my blog, but my "Big 3" (SG Nerf, NM&R, Urban Taggers) have been kinda slow recently. The reason? Probably just that there's not a whole lot of new Nerf stuff out there and it's a transitional time. Season is changing, kids are going back to school, and football nuts going to be living off of ESPN and Pepsi Max for awhile. What am I up to? Good question!
Right now, the MLTA (which I run) has just concluded it's 7th Summer Season and is now in "Off-Season" mode. While we'll still have games every now and then, the focus shifts to MODS. I really wanna get back to a few things that I had hoped to finish, like the Pulse Rifle, LTX EF5, and rewiring/repairing the LTX DMR to prep it for it's new owner.
I'm also working on a few things for our next Nerf game. While my Elite Longshot is still likely going to be my primary for these games, the Elite Retaliator is really starting to grow on me. It's been fun messing with different strength springs and testing stuff out, nothing set in stone, so I'll be sharing more info on that soon too.
Things in my personal life will be getting busier too. My girlfriend (not married yet! Rumor control!) has been studying abroad in Austria for the past 6 weeks. Admittedly, I've had a lot more free time to spend on my hobbies to help distract me from the fact that she's been gone for so long. She returns Wednesday which is great for me, not so much for my blog. I'll also be getting a new job come September 1st, which will be taking a bit more of my time than my current job has. While it's great for my wallet, I will have considerably less free time to shoot videos, do tests, and other blog-tastic stuff.
So that's where I'm at right now! I've also got a big surprise for you guys coming up in early September, so while things might not be as busy as they have been in the past month or so, you might wanna keep tabs on the blog for that announcement that I'm kinda-sorta-really looking forward to.

Good question!Right now, the MLTA (which I run) has just concluded it's 7th Summer Season and is now in "Off-Season" mode. While we'll still have games every now and then, the focus shifts to MODS. I really wanna get back to a few things that I had hoped to finish, like the Pulse Rifle, LTX EF5, and rewiring/repairing the LTX DMR to prep it for it's new owner.
I'm also working on a few things for our next Nerf game. While my Elite Longshot is still likely going to be my primary for these games, the Elite Retaliator is really starting to grow on me. It's been fun messing with different strength springs and testing stuff out, nothing set in stone, so I'll be sharing more info on that soon too.
Things in my personal life will be getting busier too. My girlfriend (not married yet! Rumor control!) has been studying abroad in Austria for the past 6 weeks. Admittedly, I've had a lot more free time to spend on my hobbies to help distract me from the fact that she's been gone for so long. She returns Wednesday which is great for me, not so much for my blog. I'll also be getting a new job come September 1st, which will be taking a bit more of my time than my current job has. While it's great for my wallet, I will have considerably less free time to shoot videos, do tests, and other blog-tastic stuff. So that's where I'm at right now! I've also got a big surprise for you guys coming up in early September, so while things might not be as busy as they have been in the past month or so, you might wanna keep tabs on the blog for that announcement that I'm kinda-sorta-really looking forward to.

September has admittedly been a slow month for Tactical Tag, which reflects how busy I've been with other things. At the same time, I know there's a slight concern out there from folks who have seen NM&R's activity take a massive dip with Jerm's departure from the hobby as he ::gasp:: refocuses his time on more important things in life. While I'm not certain of NM&R's foreseeable future, as the other administrators there are discussing our options, Tactical Tag will always be here. That much I am certain of!
There are a few things in the works to make Tactical Tag better for both my readers here and on YouTube. First, I will be opening a store that I'll list products that I've worked on. I still won't be accepting any commission work, but instead continuing to be active in the hobby and find good homes for my older projects.
Second, I WILL be bringing back the Weekly Giveaway in some form. I still haven't decided how I'm going to run it, but I can tell you it will no longer be a random selection. It will also likely not be a weekly event anymore, but rather a monthly contest with a prize. I know a lot of readers had been wanting the giveaway to return in some respect, so I'm hoping to give back to the community that has been so good to me! No official ETA on that just yet.
And lastly, I'll be improving a few media things both here and on the YouTube channel thanks to a new camera I have on order and access to better video editing software. It's something I've wanted to improve to better serve the hobby as far as promoting Laser Tag and Nerf as well as continuing to document and follow projects and make some nice tutorials. I'm really looking forward to bettering the experience here for you, so stay tuned for all that!
